Elementary Curriculum Overview

 

  • Math:  Students in grades K-5 use the Ready Classroom Mathematics textbooks and online resources.  (publisher:  Curriculum Associates) These materials were adopted in the fall of 2016 for grades 2 - 5, and in the fall of 2018 for grades K - 1. Teachers utilize print and digital resources, including i-Ready instructional license for math practice.  Components of the program are operations and algebraic thinking; number and operations in base ten; number and operations with specific focus in each grade level; measurement and data; geometry; and counting and cardinality (grade K only).

 

  • Reading:  Students in grades K-5 use the Benchmark Literacy reading materials.  (publisher:  Benchmark Education Company)  These materials were adopted in the fall of 2017 for grades K - 5. The Benchmark program is a comprehensive, research-proven program that empowers both experienced and beginning teachers with best-practice tools for vertically aligned K-5 reading, writing, speaking, listening and language instruction. The core structure of the program is a three-week unit with lessons focusing on comprehension strategies using fiction and nonfiction texts. Components of the program are phonemic awareness, phonic, fluency, vocabulary, and text comprehension. The program provides a foundation for a safe and supportive environment by explicitly teaching an organized and balanced literacy approach. 

 

  • Writing:  The district conducted a pilot and review during the 2020-2021 school year. Full implementation of the Benchmark Writers Workshop will be implemented the 2021-2022 school year in grades K - 5. This is the complimentary writing curriculum to the reading materials. (publisher:  Benchmark Education Company)  Teachers will continue to participate in professional development to integrate the writing curriculum. Writing standards include the following categories:  text types and purposes; production and distribution of writing; research to build and present knowledge; range of writing.
