February is National Heart Health Month. Eating too much sodium can increase risk for high blood pressure which can eventually lead to heart disease, stroke and kidney disease. Tips to avoid salt/sodium include:

  • Read the nutrition facts on the label when buying canned, frozen, and packaged foods and compare sodium levels before you buy. Look for packages marked as "no salt added" or "reduced in sodium".
  • Avoid overly processed foods.
  • Do not salt your food when you scratch cook.
  • Focus on whole foods that are naturally low in sodium like vegetables and fruit.
